Colli Euganei Park
This park stretches out for
about 18.702 hectors south east of Padua, it is made up
of 15 regional municipalities and composed of 81 hills,
the highest is Monte Venda, 601 MT Altitude. This area is
thickly woven with trails and paths, therefore making it
possible to admire a number of different landscapes and
vegetation: the most spectacular are Venda, Lozzo and della
Madonna. The hills of the Euganei are of volcanic origin
therefore one can discover some very important archaeological
findings, the oldest is a marine fossil dating back to 130
million years ago. There is also a large vegetation range,
from the Mediterranean clusters to chestnut-trees and oak-trees.
The fauna is very important, there are some 129 species
of birds, red-robin, hoopoe, sparrows, owl, barn owl and
tawny owl: it is quite frequent to observe the curious "succiacapre"
, a twilight-bird that makes its nest on the ground during
the summer months. The daytime vultures are the buzzard
and windhover, sparrow and sometimes the hobby. The night-time
birds are the owl, the barn owl and the tawny owl. The mammals
living here are the hedgehog, the moles and mice. The rodents
are the dormouse. The carnivorous animals are the fox, yew,
beech-marten and weasel. There are some grass snakes, the
black type (scarbonasso), and the Aesculapian snake. Vipers
also live in the higher mountain ranges. The marshy area
is home to tree-frogs, frogs and toads. The rare ululone
and emerald green toad are also to be found. The hills of
Euganei are furthermore very famous for the thermal springs,
that are an important tourist attraction. In the many holiday
farms and restaurants it is possible to taste the high quality
of the olive oil, honey and 13 D.O.C. wines.
