Cathedral

Piazza Duomo

The design of the composite facade reveals the blend of the Romanesque and Gothic styles: in the central part is a characteristic and very fine double Porch designed by Master Nicoḷ, the architect responsible for the 12th century design of the church. Worthy of note is the architecture on the right?hand side and that of the apse, examples of the refined art of the Veronese Romanesque style. A beautiful frieze accentuates the entire structure and the portal with a porch which opens out of the right?hand side. The bell?tower dates back, in the lower part to the 13th century, in the middle part to the 16th century, and in the upper part to the 20th century (architect -Fagiuoli).

The interior, harmoniously structured and of great effect, is in the Romanesque - Gothic style. it is divided into three naves by large soaring pillars of the red marble of Verona supporting pointed arches with cross vaults above. The artistic works of art housed in the church are of considerable interest. The Presbytery is characterized by an elegant tornacoro, a semicircle of Ionic columns designed by Sanmichele. The apse contains frescoes by Torbido depicting the Annunciation, Episodes in the Life of Mary and the Prophets ( 16th century).
