The story of Romeo and Juliet
Romeo
Montecchi and Juliet Capuleti, having met at a masked ball,
fall hopelessly in love with one another. Owing to the great
rivalry between the two families the two young people are
forced to meet under cover. Their secret but happy marriage
is devastated by tragic events: Romeo, having avenged his
friend Mercutio, murdered by Tybalt, cousin of juliet, is
forced to flee from Verona. The young girl in the meantime,
so as not to marry the man who is being forced on her by
her father, on the advice of Friar Laurence, drinks a potion
which makes her appear to be dead. The message which she
sends to her beloved the stratagem behind her apparent death,
unfortunately arrives too late. Romeo, having returned to
Verona, on beholding his lifeless bride takes his life and
juliet, having awoken from her long sleep, on seeing what
has taken place, stabs herself through the heart and dies
in the arms of her husband. The families of the two young
lovers, faced with their great love and the appalling tragedy,
become reconciled. The tragic story related by Shakespeare
is not substantiated for certain in the historical documents.
There certainly existed a tale which spoke of a thwarted
love affair and which finished tragically. Previously, Dante,
having lived in exile in Verona between 1299 and 1304, in
the Divine Comedy (Purgatory, canto VI, 106-108) had made
reference to the rivalry between the two families: "Come
to see Montecchi and Cappelletti ....... The critics, however,
maintain that the two names stand for two parties (imperial
and anti imperial) who were in conflict throughout the area
of Lombardy and Veneto. The presence in Verona of monuments
(Romeo's house, juliet's house, juliet's tomb) related to
the story, provides a glimpse of a factual foundation for
the story without, however, providing any certainty. In
addition, there is evidence of the existence of a family
named Dal Cappello which might recall that of the Capuleti.
Even if we cannot set the seal on the truth of the love
affair and rivalry between the two families, it is gratifying
to think that the story of Romeo and juliet did actually
take place and that, despite its unhappy ending, it continues
to be the symbol of the intense passion which can exist
between young people.
