Natural
Park of Lessinia

Founded
in 1990 and is 10.368 hectors big, which is the high plateau
of Lessinia. This area is characterised by karstism phenomenon
owing to the fact that there are many dolines, caves and
hollows in the ground, (Spluga della Preta), with some very
spectacular natural carvings on the calcarious rocks (Ponte
di Veja. Valle delle Sfingi), and hidden and clustered valleys
and also due to the absence of water on the surface. Another
important fact is the fossil deposits, spread out in various
parts of the high plateau and lower valley: the most famous
is Pesciara di Bola. Thanks to the altitude of the whole
area the flora is various and some rare species can be seen
and appreciated: one can encounter oak-groves, bay-oaks,
pine-trees and broadleaf-trees; green grazing lands contrast
with the beech-wood-trees and red-pine-trees. One can find
windflowers, buttercups bellflowers and some very precious
flowers like the "martagone lily" . Among the wildlife animals
to be seen are the marmot, hare, roe deer, fox, budger,
and beech-martens, alas the pine martens are nowadays very
rare. In the eastern part of Lessinia in the Gruppo del
Carega it is possible to spot the chamois, this species
has only lately been reintroduced into this area and they
are rapidly expanding. The birds present are the pheasant,
grey partridge, a great amount of sparrows, red-peak woodpecker
and the commune owl. It is worthwhile mentioning the presence
of the raptorial royal eagle, goshawk and commune sparrow-hawk.
In the forest there are two very rare species of birds nest,
the black-woodpecker and the "capogrosso owl".
